Wood apple is Bilva or Sriphala in Sanskrit, commonly called as Bael in India is indigenous to India. Its fruit - both ripe and unripe, seeds and the leaves of this plant have medicinal values. The extract of the roots are also used for certain medicines. It is said that the potential of bael fruit has more scope for utilization. The fruit of this tree are hard, woody and smooth with pulp inside. The pulp can be eaten fresh or dried.

Wood Apple controls body coolness. The leaves are effective in decreasing blood cholesterol levels. It is used as remedy for chronic diarrhea, dysentery, peptic ulcers and as laxative. Leaf decoction is said to alleviate asthma. Decoctions of the root are taken to relieve palpitation of the heart, indigestion and bowel inflammations. Root, leaves and bark of wood apple are used in treating snakebite. The fruit can be dried and served with jaggery. Jam can be prepared from matured unripe fruits.
